I could not agree with you extra relating to taking part in a wizard as a PC.
However on the one hand my (resp. our) perspective on taking part in “tolkienesque” could differ from that of extra (for instance) informal gamers who do not need to tinker with the entire historical past, cultures and/or canon of Center-earth, so who am I to inform them, to not play anybody from the films they appreciated. 😉
And then again (and that is perhaps one thing for the extra canonical gamemasters like us) I’d like to introduce e. g. Gandald as a NPC, who aids the group after which vanishes once in a while (like he did in “The Hobbit”). Excellent method imho to assist them with troublesome fights or in any issues the place having a wizard might come in useful. And for this event I would wish some stats (if his involement can be greater than only a narrative half wherein case I would not even want these).
